Getting An Emergency Supply From The Pharmacy

You just ran out of pills, there are no more refills, your doctor isn't in his office during the weekend. What should you do? If it is an emergency, such that not taking a pill will lead to fatal symptoms such as a stroke or heart attack, head to the hospital IMMEDIATELY.

Generally, patients can go to the pharmacy and ask for an emergency supply. Two scenarios can occur depending on your history with the pharmacy:

1) If you have been a long-time patient of the pharmacy and have gotten that prescription at the pharmacy recently, the pharmacist will most likely give you an emergency supply. Reason being is that, they can simply call the doctor the next day to request a refill for you over the phone, have it ready for you to pick up, and be reimbursed for your earlier emergency supply.

2) However, if you have not been to the pharmacy before for prescriptions or have not received that certain medication from the pharmacy, it is less likely for you to get an emergency supply as they cannot access your medication history and cannot request a refill from your doctor regarding that medication without a previous prescription on file.
